UNHCR, with partner “Mission Armenia” NGO, organised an event for a group of displaced women in “Mamik” ethnographic guesthouse in one of the old districts of Yerevan. The event, which was facilitated by “KEAN” cultural-educational NGO, aimed at promoting displaced people’s peaceful coexistence and their engagement in the life of the host community.
The celebration brought together women of different cultures and traditions - from Iraq, Syria, Nagorno-Karabakh and Ukraine - who participated in a spectacular event illustrating and passing on the messages of the old Armenian tradition of Easter celebration.
The women were happily engaged in an interactive presentation about the story of Easter holiday, the symbol of the Tree of Life and Easter eggs, traditional Armenian pastry “Gata” with a coin of luck, a “ghapama” (rice with raisins and nuts baked in a pumpkin) and Armenian bread “lavash” baking master-class, as well as interesting Easter ceremonies combined with old Armenian games, dances, songs, and rhymes.
After the celebration, the women gathered for an Easter treat over friendly chats and sharing of life stories and memories, making parallels of the Eastern Armenian and their countries’ history and traditions, and exchanged their thoughts and new ideas. The women truly enjoyed and benefited from this nice event – it was held in a very warm and genuine atmosphere of care, solace, and inspiration.
